What is Electrolysis Hair Removal and Why?

Presence of hair on some body parts and absence in others enhances the look. Presence/absence of hair in private body parts is a matter of great concern for many people. At this point, electrolysis hair removal cosmetic surgery comes as a great relief to men/women who are conscious with their looks.

Also known as hair removal electrolysis, it is a way of removing individual hairs from the face or body using a needled that is inserted into the hair follicle. The hair follicle is then “killed” by short wave radio frequencies. Sometimes these medical electrolysis devices are also called electric epilators.

Hair electrolysis as a procedure for unwanted hair removal is used to remove hair on the face (eyebrows, upper and lower lips, cheeks, chin, hairline, bridge of the nose between eyebrows, and sideburns) and also on the neck, shoulders, arms and underarms, breasts, abdomen, bikini line, legs, back, and chest.

Electrolysis Hair Removal – The Real Story

It is not used to remove hair from inside the ears or nose. You are also not a good candidate for electrolysis if you want hair removed from a mole or scar.

Perhaps one of the most misunderstood aspects of electrolysis is the idea that you can throw away your razor after just one treatment. Like laser hair removal, electrolysis requires a series of treatments to be effective and even then, the treatment does not always prevent hair follicles from growing new hair.

The electrolysis procedure is also slow, painstaking and painful. A small needle or thin metal probe is inserted into the opening of the skin where hair grows (small sacs beneath the skin called hair follicles). Next, a low-level electrical current passes through the needle and destroys the hair follicle. Each hair follicle is zapped with an electric current for about a minute. Hair is unable to grow back in an area where the follicle has been destroyed. However it can take between twelve and thirty treatments just to destroy one hair follicle. Most of the time hair does grow back thinner and weaker. Cost of electrolysis is also considerable, most of the salons charge at least $30 an hour for a treatment.

The process of electrolysis can be slow and require several treatment sessions to destroy the hair follicles. Treatment can be uncomfortable; the feeling is as tedious having someone plucking hairs out of your skin one by one. The destruction of each individual hair follicle may take from less than 1 second up to 20 seconds.

As hair naturally grows in cycles and hair follicles are only zapped into oblivion when the hair follicle is in a growth cycle, electrolysis will only succeed in removing those hairs that are in that growth stage. Repeated visits are necessary to catch all of the hair follicles in one area at one time.

Still, use of electrolysis has become one of the most popular standby methods to remove hair. Laser hair removal is applicable for a wide range of needs, from small area upper lip hair removal for women, facial hair removal to full body back hair removal for men.

However, it is important to be realistic about what electrolysis can actually do for you. It is considered to be about effective as laser hair removal, which does not remove all hair forever either. The treatment may not work at all on coarse or stubborn black hairs and stubbles or it may take seven to ten treatments for those hairs to be eliminated, provided that those stubborn hairs are caught in the right growth cycle.

Another caveat is that some people have very sensitive skin that does not tolerate the constant plucking. Although the majority of people have little cause to complain some skins simply break out into blisters. Ingrown hairs are also a consequence of electrolysis as sometimes the radio frequency simply does not kill the root completely and the hair grows again.

Electrolysis Hair Removal – After effects

If a patient or client has extremely sensitive skin the cosmetician or plastic surgeon will apply a topical anesthesia or numbing cream (lidocaine) before plucking hairs with an electrolysis instrument. Treatments can take anywhere from ten minutes to an hour to complete depending on the size of the area to be attended too.

After the procedure the treated area may slightly red or swollen. Your doctor or cosmetician will give you a cream or ointment to soothe any irritation or inflammation. Never bleach or wax an area that has been treated by electrolysis as that can cause scarring, depigmentation, blackheads, whiteheads and a feeling like “razor burn.

Before you resort to electrolysis for hair removal it is important to understand that the best that can be achieved is a temporary stoppage of hair growth for an extended period of time. Almost everybody suffers some regrowth of hair after a treatment but the good news is that the hair that grows back is usually fairer and thinner in texture.

Electrolysis also requires some patience before you see any results. You should notice a loss of unwanted hair in the treated area within several weeks to months after the initial treatment. If you are the impatient type electrolysis may not be the right procedure for you.
